Turn in the road

TURN IN THE ROAD

Formerly known as a Three Point Turn
This was changed into a Turn in The Road because roads became smaller and more awkward to perform the manoeuvre in just three movements.
As with reversing left or right into a road, this was a process designed to allow you to get your vehicle facing the opposite direction should there be no roundabouts close by, or any left or right hand junctions to reverse into.
Another manoeuvre that has been removed from the DVSA Practical Driving Test, but again still important to know how to carry it out safely.

Process for turn in the road

The process to carry out this in a safe manner.
1. MSPSGL routine as you want to pull up alongside the left hand kerb.
2. Once there, and having checked that it is safe to move off, creep the car forward whilst placing full lock on to the right.
3. As you pass the central point of the road (The Camber) be prepared to cover the footbrake in case the car starts rolling away towards the kerb.
4. Once you are about 3/4 of the way across the road, begin putting your steering on full lock in the opposite direction.
5. Once full lock is on and before you hit the kerb, engage the handbrake, and select reverse gear.
6. Carry out a full observational check to ensure it is safe to carry on with the manoeuvre.
7. If safe, slowly bring the vehicle back up the camber of the road using clutch control to keep the vehicle slow.
8. Constantly checking up and down the road throughout the manoeuvre.
9. Be prepared to cover the footbrake again as you pass the top of the camber to ensure the vehicle does not roll away towards the kerb.
10. Once 3/4 of the way across the road begin placing the steering lock back to full lock to the right, this will put your wheels in the position they need to be for the next stage.
11. Once full lock is on and before you hit the kerb, engage the handbrake, and select first gear
12. Carry out a full observational check to ensure it is safe to carry on with the last stage of the manoeuvre.
13. If safe, move off and drive on down the road.

AT ANY STAGE OF THIS MANOEUVRE!
If pedestrians, cyclists, or any other vehicle arrive then STOP!
Wait to see what their intentions are, and only when it is safe should you continue on with the next stage.
At no stage should you wave on other traffic or pedestrians.
Let them decide that it is safe for them to proceed.
If you are flashed by another vehicle, ensure what their intentions of the flash are, it may mean
THEY ARE COMING THROUGH, it may not mean for you to proceed.
